There are many web 2.0 tools that we might use for this project. (See the link to the guide below for more choices.)
For our project students may use any of the following:
Voicethread: to show photos and add voice
Audacity (PC)/Garageband (Mac): to make audio files
Windows MovieMaker (PC)/iMovie (Mac)/Jaycut (online): to record and edit an interview in digital video format
This guide was written especially for educators, who want to teach 21st century skills, such as collaborating, communicating, and connecting, through digital storytelling
This is a great free downloadable guide to digital storytelling. Just click on the buy now button and on the next screen look for the free download link.
Often students do not live in the same town as their grandparents. In the past I have had students use digital recorders and speaker phones to record interviews.
For any future phone interviews I plan to have students use ipadio. This web 2.0 technology allows students to directly record and save their conversation to the internet. An embed code is given and the interview can be posted.
Some editing may also be done on ipadio. iPadio
